These are galvanized vented dormer like things. What is their official name?

If it were for a window, it would be a "hooded dormer", sometimes "bonneted dormer" way up North. With a vent installed, I would call it a hooded vent dormer.

Thanks Bill. I wasn't far off. In the report I called it a dormer vent.

What is the purpose of those vents? I mean, why not use regular roof vents? Architectural?

I've heard them called "eyebrow" vents.

It's not the shape for an eyebrow vent. Just like eyebrow dormers, it'd be shaped like an eyebrow.
