I am not very well versed in structural support. We acquired a property recently with a second story addition and I tore down the ceiling tile and this is what was underneath. Above this ceiling is a bedroom and a closet. Is it supported ok? Should I worry about this falling down? Thank you.

No. Not at all.

Absolutely, regardless of how long it's been that way.

Marc, thank you for replying to my message. Judging from your post count and reputation, I'll take this as good advice.

I didn't think it was ok this way, and figured as much when we got this property. I'll have a crew come in and look at it in a few days. Hoping the repair won't be too hard on the bank.

But are you aware of his reputation?

I could be wrong, but I have some doubts. Either that's the worst framing job on the planet, or that's a decorative treatment.

Can you take a vertical measurement from the top surface of the floor above to the underside of the apparent joists? Measure the stair tread riser heights.

My doubts were raised when I saw the additional riser in the middle photo. The floor could be thicker than the gray "joists" would lead you to believe. If your floor is the same depth as the gray "joists" plus the 3/4" or so for the sublfoor, then you have a problem. If it ends up being thicker, then you have something more going on.

Curious...what's my 'reputation'?

Gives me an idea for a new poll:
  • most knowledgable member
  • most likely to start a contentious issue
  • most acclimated member
  • most interesting posts
  • most useful posts
  • best writer
  • most caustic writer
  • most objective writer
  • least 'grounded' writer
  • most diverse writer
  • most specialized writer
  • et cetera

Marc, it really dosen't matter as long as you have one.
Some men live their whole lives without ever having a reputation.

A guy I used to work with said that all of the time, anyway.

Shall we add "most obnoxious"?

To the original poster- the floor looks really, really underbuilt, but you live there- is it springy?
If you drop a roll, will you have to chase it?
Do you have to push your dresser back against the wall once a week? Does your wife grab the chair arm when you walk by?
Has the cast and crew of the original Batman TV show asked to use that room to produce a remake?
Does the room itself get satellite TV reception?
Would Arnold and his maid come to rest in the center of the room?

On another note: Wouldn't one think Arnold could score a good looking woman?

Yeah, you would think the inseminator would have chosen one of the better looking groupies.

Allow me to respond . . .

I know you are, but what am I?

Remember the skank that Hugh Grant was busted with when he was involved with Elizabeth Hurley? I don't understand it, but there definitely seems to be a trend. I heard somewhere that celebrities like Ahnold and Hugh are narcissistic, and have a need to be the most attractive person in a relationship/tryst/whatever to make them feel powerful.

I'd be contender for like four of the categories in your original list so I thought that you rather intended that but then I thought I was being paranoid.
Now, with the narcissist addition, I'm positive that it really is mostly about me.

To the OP from Oklahoma......

It's not always like this.

Although, you should be proud; you got some pretty good one liners out of it.
