A 78-year old man died in Melrose, MA in October. The deck was installed about six feet off the ground and collapsed on top of the man while he was trying to repair it.

Blow up the photo in the attached link. You'll see only spikes protruding from the ledger and you'll see where the deck ledger wasn't flashed when it was attached to the house and you'll see rot where water had been getting behind the vinyl siding and then drained behind the ledger.

Here's some pics of that deck. I wonder which part he was working on. It's a sad story.

I love it when I get on a job with a newer house that doesn't have a deck built yet. I tell 'em to go with free standing. I say, if the contractor looks confused when you say you want it, call a different one.

That's just sad.

A man that age should die in bed with his 25 year old mistress, not under a nasty old deck like that.

I was just under a deck like that last week, to assess how rotted the wall is beneath it. I didn't think a thing of it until I saw this.

Since that house is in the neighborhood I grew up in, I'll just chime in and say that you probably can't blame the city inspector for this, most folks don't pull permits for stuff like this.

Sad story, but better to die doing what you enjoy (even if you don't do it that well) than to die in front of the TV watching other people do it.
