I let them know that it's been glazed, 'cause it invariably chips and I don't want to hear about it a year down the road.

I see a lot of fiberglass units that are coated. They look good for a while but they require maintenance coats. I would say in general you can expect 25% to have some chipping or peeling within 5 years. Of course this can vary based on use. My wife owns a dog grooming shop. The shop has a fiberglass tub shower enclosure. It requires a fresh coat every two years.

We had the tub in the kids bathroom re glazed. I think that like most things the quality of the end result is in proportion to the time spent in preparation. The guy we hired spent about 4 hours sanding and prepping the tub. This was done about 5 years ago and it still looks great.
Like most of you I have seen many tubs that were peeling. I always make a point of documenting the re-glazed tubs.

To be clear, they're not re-glazed, they're painted.

I see several that work great after several years.
Cheap jobs chip around the drain first, then elsewhere.
It's a decent budget alternative to ripping out a whole bathroom.
I almost always note it's been painted.

Chad, Of course you are right, they are painted. it's common in my area to refer to it as being 're-glazed'
