1956 ranch style house built on a slab. In the attic was insulation material I've not seen before. It looked like finely ground organic matter of some type.

What is it?

Thanks Bill.

BTW, what was a common thickness of this stuff. In this house it was 2-3 inches.

That's about the depth that I see with that stuff John. On a side note, Bill have you ever had a client test this stuff to determine if asbestos was actually present?

I've tried to burn that stuff - no way, at least not the samples I've taken.
I just call it shredded wood insulation.

There'd be no reason to add asbestos. It is a fireproofed wood product.

I hope the stuff is fireproof since the attic was loaded with electrical issues. Here's just a scratch of the surface.

Damn I mis-spoke with my question sorry about that Bill. I realize now that it was coated with a fire retardant.
