A vapor retarder "sandwich" can be as bad or worse than a vapor retarder installed backward.
Other than that, it looks like a basic mildly moldy crawlspace.
It doesn't matter "what kind" the mold is. Damp crawlspaces have mold.
Figure out how to dry out the crawlspace, and install a vapor barrier on the floor.

That is what I was thinking. almost 8 thousand sq ft of replacing insulaiton and adding a floor barrier is going to be a bummer. but, it is what it is...thanks for the timely reply.

The insulation is wrong.
Are you sure that's mold, or is it some kind of dark sill sealer?

I thought the same thing.....it might be some sort of degrading sill sealer.
But, I bet it's moldy regardless.

It is definitely mold. It was also on the dirt floor of the crawlspace in the middle of spans where no sealer would be applied. Thanks again for all of your replies.

There are two positives though: The insulation is so poorly installed that it won't be too difficult to remove. And, the foil vapor barrier has so many holes in it that it isn't likely to have caused any significant damage.
