Large apartment complex (400+ units, 50+ bldgs)

In some of the buildings, there were sprinkler heads above the furnaces and in no other location. No sprinkler riser, no main fire shutoff, nothing else.

I have heard that this is recommended by some local jurisdictions even if connected to domestic water; but can someone please shed more light on this for me?

Sorry. I've never seen that. It doesn't really make a lot of sense. If I had a choice of where to put a single sprinkler head in a building, it wouldn't be above the furnace.

Just for fun, where would you put one sprinkler head?

If my house ever burns, all I want is to get my family out. After that I'll be beating the firemen back with a stick. The house can burn to the ground. They won't be doing me any favors by saving it.

Now I need to have a chat with my neighbor, he's the fire chief.

Today by coincidence I found one above a furnace, connected to a second inside a storage closet, but none other in the building. This was the office of a property built in 1938 and remodeled in 2005. I would assume when they installed the system, they would include the other areas in the building. I've seen many high rises with a sole head located above the dumpster under the trash chute, which makes more sense.
