I just did a house originally built in 1870, that had a rebuilt floor frame system. It looked like it was done in maybe the fourtys. Big, thick, steel, joist hangers.

When did they start making joist hangers?

I have publications starting from the early 1890s that prescribe, illustrate and advertise joist hangers. There were some published municipal ordinances specifically requiring them by the mid 1890s.

Thanks, Bill.

The new lumber, the really cool home made steel posts, and the old sill, turned into a "Hey wait a minute moment". Check out the top of the hanger where they chiseled the floor board. The beams were built up dimension lumber. The whole place was straight.

I hate new houses.

I'm in awe of the skills and pride of work that once existed.

What happened?

I've seen those in my area on several occasions. Early to mid 40's is a good guess. WWII stuff.

I see massive iron hangers on old warehouses. These are 1880's-1890's buildings.
