Never seen this in Acadiana. Reminds me of what I've seen in some threads but can't recall it's identity. It was installed in only one joist bay...odd. Early 60's home.

Anyone recognize it?

Vermiculite. Really hit and miss whether or not it contains asbestos. It depends on where in the mine it came from.

Marc, I too have seen vermiculite in one bay only. I put it down to homeowner's lunacy, but maybe there was a perceived fire hazard there? Vermiculite is extremely fireproof.

It was sold in convenient sacks, so maybe somebody acquired just one sack.

The trade name was "Zonolite". Maybe they thought it should only go in one zone.....

Someone likely bought a bag to use for potting plants and then didn't need the rest so they dumped it in the attic.

Last time I saw that stuff, the guy had been taking it out of the attic in small quantities and selling it to the neighbor ladies for their gardens.

Mark,

Don't worry about the asbestos you inhaled on that attic inspection, it will probably take 15 to 20 years before it starts eating into you lungs.
