Mike, if you still need to know, don't ask me, I'm Canadian. 1970's we start to see multiple receptacles along the walls, late 60's even.

The details have changed over the years, but the 1956 edition was the first to require one receptacle for every 12' of wall length.
As far back as the '47 edition, it required one receptacle for every 20' of wall length.
I don't have anything older than that, so I don't know if it goes even further back.
