When it needs it. I just keep it on auto so I'd say about half and half. Even on auto it takes really good pictures up close of unit labels, wires etc.

Well, I think Kiel is full of crap about lithium batteries. Soooooo, off I go to Google to find some support.

oooooooppppppssssss! Erby is wrong, not Kiel.

It is NOT GOOD to fully deplete lithium batteries on a routine basis!

Guess I need to change my ways.

Thanks for the heads up, Kiel.

Pentax W90 Question ?

A 2012 update on my Pentax W90.

So I've going strong with the W90 for a year and a half. I like the fact that I can rinse it off when it's dirty and that it slips in/out of my pocket without catching.

However, I started having problems with the batteries (I thought). The camera wouldn't turn on and the batteries seemed to be dead. I had been buying back up batteries and had a cadre of about 8, all different brands, and could still never get more than about 45 shots per battery.

So I buy 2 more batteries, but the camera still won't turn on. Then I decide maybe it's the charger. Then I realize, NOPE, it's the camera. Sometimes it turns on as it should. Sometimes it takes 3-5 minutes of playing with it/batteries/shaking it/whatever when I'm desperate.

I called Pentax and asked them if it was a common problem. His exact words were, "Well, I've seen it before." Hmmm....

He couldn't give me a ballpark price of fixing it and they have a $12 charge of giving you a price if you decide not to fix.

So, I'm trying to decide what to do. Any suggestions? Anyone having this problem?

Bruce

Any thoughts?

Kurt M. came across a new, durable camera, but I don't recall the name/details of the unit.

I'm sure he will provide an update when he can.

JDirks has been using a Lumix (dunno which model) for some time and is very pleased with it.

Cheers,

I got the Nikon aw100. Nice camera, too expensive, I got it with some coupons and incentives.

The Lumix is a much better price.

Any waterproof durable camera is fine.

Don't spend alot of money on a work camera. <$100. I got 6 yrs. from my Kodak $95 and I'm on 2 yrs for my Canon Powershot $95. My back-up camera is a $50 Kodak with a rebate.

Waterproof? Are you kidding? What the hell kind of inspections you guys doing?

My camera has a strap that I put around my wrist so I don't drop it in a toilet or off the roof.

I routinely stick the thing into drain tile for pictures. I work in rain occasionally. Waterproof is smart, but it's more about impact durability, dirt and crud.

Over the years I've used multiple cameras. By far the best camera I have found is the made by Olympus, Stylus Tough. Its been hanging from my neck for years and routinely gets wet, muddy, dusty, etc.

Have recently upgraded to a newer Olympus, TG-610.

Great little camera.

Find picture of sea turtle attached.

Yep, crud proof would be a better description than waterproof!

I've been using my W90 since October of 2010 and I'm still on the original OEM battery. I get about 200 photos per battery. I've dropped it by accident onto pavement a couple of times and accidentally dropped it a mud puddle. One day I slipped on a muddy lawn with it in my hand and when I caught myself on the ground it was smashed into the mud. It's dented, scratched and dirty and it still goes on and on.

ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!

I bought cheap non-waterproof cameras for years thinking the same thing as others have said--if they stop working, they're cheap so just buy another one.

Then I bought a waterproof model. The math is much more favorable in the favor of buying one waterproof camera vs. 3-4, maybe 5 cheaper models.

I agree. My Pentax never did crap out; I just ran into a promotion deal on the Nikon for about 1/4 of list, so I got it.

Actually, water never got my other cameras; dirt in crawlspaces did.

It's more about crud proof than waterproof.
