around here its called anselbrick or insulbrick
the name was usually printed on the back

not much different than asphalt roofing but lasts longer due to the pitch, haha.

Tom's right. I've called it insulbrick.
It's like a celotex board imprinted with a pattern and some granule. It "works" largely due to the underlying siding providing the moisture barrier. Sort of an early rainscreen wall effect.
It's always beat to hell around any fenestration, and there's usually chunks falling off in several locations.

Thanks for the input. It was in good shape except for the damaged and missing pieces. What reamined was pretty sound. Was very much like composition roofing material and is lasting a long time.....thanks Wayne.
