"Do you have any standards or codes that state how far out of plumb the studs have to be before they are considered crooked?"

I was actually asked this question by a Superintendent today. I had called out several crooked studs throughout the home. He was trying to sugar coat the findings during a pre-sheetrock walkthrough with my client. The client then insisted he call me.

I really had to bite my tongue to keep from replying "If you have to ask, it's too far out."

So, are there any codes or standards regarding out of plumb studs?

Post some pictures of the studs, showing the out of plumb condition.

NAHB Residential Construction Performance Guidelines (Homeowner Reference)

4 Walls
Structural

4-1 Observation: Wood framed wall is out of plumb.
Performance Guideline: Wood framed walls shall not be more than 3/8-inch out of plumb for any 32 inches in any vertical measurement.
Corrective Measure: The contractor will repair to meet the performance guideline.

4-2 Observation: The wall is bowed.
Performance Guideline: All interior and exterior walls have slight variances in their finished surface. Walls shall not bow more than 1/2-inch out of line within any 32-inch horizontal measurement , or 1/2-inch within any 8 foot vertical measurement.
Corrective Measure: The contractor will repair to meet the performance guideline.

It's only a guideline and it doesn't have the force of code; but it was that builder's contemporaries that wrote it.

That information is unlikely to do him much good in China, which, according to his IP address, is where he's from.

This is a link dropper. It copied an entire 2004 post by Don Lawson and pasted it as a new topic.

Huh,

He must have snuck back in here and put the link in; 'cuz when I first responded to the little sneak there wasn't any link in there.

Wish there was software I could buy that would detect someone posting from China that would send a trojan virus back to their computer as soon as they clicked the "submit" button.
