Hi guys--

I did an inspection on about a two-year-old house a few weeks ago where there were a half-dozen or so rafters at the gabled garage roof that fell anywhere from half an inch to three quarters of an inch short of meeting the ridge. To compensate, the framer had simply shot something like 8 pounds of nails into each one, which of course made a mangled mess of the rafter ends. I told my client that the house wouldn't fall down because of this, but that it was substandard work. Despite the fact that it could be fixed with half a dozen pieces of scrap 2 x 6 and about an hour of time, the seller is refusing to fix it, and says he has a "contractor" who claims that it meets the code and is perfectly fine.

So could anyone furnish me with the code reference making it clear that the full length of the rafter end should bear against the ridge?

(And yes, I've already told the buyer to ask the contractor to furnish the code section that says it's OK.)

Thanks.

Kevin

Arkansas uses the 2006 IRC. Table R602.3(1) specifies the nail schedule for connections between the rafters and the ridge. 4-16d if toe nailed, 3-16d if faced nailed.

The WFCM might have more but I haven't a copy.

Kevin, the APA has text and a drawing in their roof framing specs that state "rafters should bear fully upon the ridge board to prevent horizontal rotation."

I saved the drawing at some point, but can't readily locate it. If you Google "rafter ridge board prevent rotation," you'll find similar references.

I'd just use R802.3 it states "to" not close.

2006
R802.3 Framing details. Rafters shall be framed to ridge board or to each other with a gusset plate as a tie. ...

Kevin,

If only he had used "10 pounds" of nails ... then it would be OK!!

Further in the passage to the reference provided: IRC 2006 R802.3 "Ridge board shall be at least 1-inch nominal thickness and not less in depth than the cut end of the rafter."

Thanks for the replies. The issue wasn't the number of nails attaching the rafter to the ridge, and it wasn't the depth/height of the ridge. It was the fact that the rafters were cut on a different angle than they should have been, and that they didn't meet the ridge. Here's a pic of one of the affected rafters. (I count at least 11 nails for two opposing rafters.)

What part of "rafters should bear fully upon the ridge board" doesn't he understand.

I don't see a problem with it. It's how you're looking at it. See if you look at it as a wood rafter not bearing on the ridge board (boooooring) then yeahhhh there may be an issue, BUT!!!!, if you look at it as a steel reinforced rafterhead with a seismic gap for the roof to move with the shaking.... then it's perrrrrrrfect!
