I advised my client to have this rebuilt. The real esate agent said it is just a fire escape. I told me client to have this rebuilt. Also, the whole thing was sitting on deteriorated 12" x 12" brick piers.

It's a porch and I've never seen anything like it. If there was a fire, I'd go out the front way.

Yup, it's a fire escape alright. You light it on fire and make your escape.

It is a temporary scaffold with a roof, not safe enough for a fire escape.

Maybe if the realtor housed his/her family on the 3rd floor the attitude would be altered slightly?

It has an eery resemblance to a few tens of thousands back porches in Chicago rental neighborhoods.

But, heck, it's only for fire escape; it'll hardly ever get used.......

Kurt,

Wasn't it a "porch" eerily similar to this one that collapsed in Chicago about a decade ago and killed and seriously maimed a bunch of folks?

7/3/2003, the day porches became big news in Chicago.

Actually, a big ( main) part of the problem was the 162 kids jumping up and down partying. Since these were the children of wealthy white suburbanites, the collapse had to be someones fault other than the childrens.

We now have a porch code that provides a porch approximately 3 times stronger than an IRC deck. Which is goofy, because there's about 100,000 porches that look like the one Hockstein posted still standing, largely in poor neighborhoods.
