If you ponder the path of a ground fault current that could result, from switch to earth.....eeeeyoowwww!
The GFCI wouldn't eliminate the shock, just reduce it to a low value and cut it short to a fraction of a second.

I'd recommend a motion detector on that switch for hands free operation. 
At least it's on the left - eat with the right, wipe with the left, eh?
