Was it code for anchor bolts to be used in 1984?

or do most homes you see built around 1984 have them?

Thanks

We were already installing them routinely in 1972, when I entered the masonry trade.

Now that you mention it, Eric, I have seen them missing a couple times and pitifully loose many times, but that's the carpenter's responibility.

I couldn't find a single nut present on the anchor bolts of this house. Same basement over a crawl space house that had too short or missing squash blocks on the i-joists.

They're just guides to make certain that, when a tornado comes along, the home is lifted straight up, instead of off to one side - to protect other homes in the neighborhood. It's only cricket, you understand...

In the '70s CABO required 1/2" bolts 6' on center and not more than 12" from corners.

In 1968, we were installing anchor bolts in foundation walls up here in the North. It is way easier to build the floor with the sill firmly attached to the concrete.

With the nuts missing, the house still has to jump 2 or 3 inches to clear the bolts. Not saying it can't happen in tornado country.

What? You're older than me, John? You really must update your profile pic. I'd have never guessed....

Me and that Chevy are the same age. I like your holster set. Wanna trade some comics for it? I got "Treasure Island".

If memory serves, those darn cap guns never did fire right, so I'd probably be temped...

Just a quick note. In the disaster and insurance inspection vernacular, a home without sill plate anchorages is called a slider. If in the future you ever see footage from a helicopter of a neighborhood that got hit by a tornado or hurricane, sliders stand out as clean foundations or empty basement basins, with a big mass of debris about 40 feet away. (Also of note, the connector manufacturers do make retrofit sill plate anchors.)

Yeah,

We've had sliders here too. There was one 100 year old home on Beacon Hill that slid off it's foundation during the Nisqually quake 11 years ago and ended up in the middle of an intersection.
