Before I spend time messing around, perhaps you can save me such.

My old Sony 12.1 megapixel camera gave me problems, so I bought a new Sony 16.1 megapixel (same Cybershot model). Now, when I convert my MS Word reports to Adobe, the picture quality with the newer camera sucks in the Adobe report.

Easy *settings* answer, or do I have to spend a lot of time figuring this out? Thanks for any help.

Do you resize them? If so, what program and to what rez?

I ask, because I'm having similar weird issues with my new camera.

Jim Luttrall (DFW HI) was/is having some sizing problems with his new Optio WG-1 as well.

His situation is the image size once he imports it into MS Word (the basis for his reports).

Some strange happenings going on with some of the newer cameras and how they are treating images and once (in Jim's case) the image is "huge" ... even if he took a "small" image with the camera.

I was reading that others were having similar complaints about the Word application and how it was treating images.

Don't know the answer, but others are also have some issues.

That's what I didn't want to spend time figuring out. . .

Only thing I use is MS Office Picture Manager to auto-correct each pict. Don't know what size/rez start with/end with.

Seems like trial and error between new & old camera is in line.

Yeah, very strange. With the old camera, I'd batch import, then batch resize in Preview (the Mac utility for this stuff), import into Filemaker Pro, print, done. Quick fast easy, everything worked great.

New camera, same process, but the resize makes them really tiny, as in length and width. I have been playing with all the settings for proportion, but it still comes out teeny. I have to go with a higher rez, which makes for a large file size.

Don't know if it's the camera, the software, the Mac .pdf engine, or what.

Kurt: I assume your preferences in preview have the same settings in the image and pdf settings?

Yep. I've tested it between the new and old camera, same settings. Old camera image resize fine, new camera images not fine.

Really weird.

For what it is worth, I figured out that my problem is the different way the images are treated by the camera, not the resizing program or the report program (MS Word.)
It seems the "standards" are different depending on the camera manufacturer's software.
I tried several different resizing programs with the same results.
The only work around I found was to manually re-size each individual image inside my report software, very time consuming.
I was very glad when I got my Cannon camera back from the factory and I quit worrying about it until next time I have to use the backup camera.

Well, it ain't the cameras; old camera, which was fine & dandy, does the same thing. I think it's a recent glitch in MS Word.

Regardless, now using password-protected MS Word reports, and not even converting to PDF's. Saves a bit of time, and picture quality is great.

All that said, any concerns with providing a protected MS Word formatted report versus a PDF?

Not sure if it helps, but I use a Nikon Cool-pix and when I go hi-res (about 12 mil pixels) the pictures look crappy in any PDF files, use about a 3 mil res which is still above the standard computer resolution and they look OK. I don't use MS-Word, I report with PDFs.

What PDF engine? I was having issues with PDFCreator making huge (20-25 mb) files. Switched to the embedded engine in the latest version of Word and the same document looks better and is up to 10 mb smaller. The picture tools completely suck though.

Glad I use HomeGauge and don't have that problem.

Have y'all tried Faststone Photo Resizer yet?

Like Erby, I use HomeGuage and produce PDFs through that which I print out for clients.

I just did some more testing with MS Word and inserting images. FYI ... I don't use MS Word for my reports so I don't have the problem noted and that Jim L. has experienced.

Anyway ... I opened MS Word (v 2010) and inserted images created with my Pentax Optio W90 (an early model of the WG-1 that Jim L. has) and all the images opened to fill the page I had on the screen.

I tried images that I had "downsized" through Fast Stone resizer and the images still opened "large".

I then went back into my archives of images I had taken with my Canon A630 at various image resolutions and sizes. They all imported into MS Word per the size from the camera or what they had been resized to.

I don't have any image size issues with my software used for PDF report generation (Whisper Reporter). Similar to what y'all with HomeGauge are noting.

It has to do with the way Microsoft is addressing the images from the new cameras. I've read discussions about this image-sizing issue on many forums and how it impacts others who are importing images into the Word application.

I wish I could help; but I'm not experiencing any issues when I convert to PDF.

I batch resize everything from the camera using Fast Stone Resizer (Thanks for the tip Kurt) and then I use the Picture Drop feature in Inspect Express running in my Word 2010 version to drop them into the report. The program always sizes them the same and I can make them smaller or larger or move them around at will and when I save the report and then safe another copy in pdf they always print exactly the way they look in the report.

ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!

Mike
