Was there a guy in the corner wearing a turban and playing a funny looking flute-thingy?

Scott, I'm not sure if you're being facetious or not (?), but that looks more like bracing or "blocking" to keep the rafters evenly spaced at midspan until they got the decking on rather than an intended purlin.

I thought the exact same thing, but then I have never seen "blocking" in a continuous run. It is nailed onto each rafter with two nails and another board, almost like a stiff back.

Counting the sheets of OSB(5) would put the rafter span around 20'. This is why I think it should be a real purlin. I'm just going to call for some vertical bracing, then it will act like a purlin and provide the blocking to keep them from racking..

This is how it is attached to the rafters.
