Garage Question

Hmmm,
I don't think I've ever seen that specified in the IRC. Personally, I'd go with what the minimum opening is for any door - 6ft. 8inches.
OT - OF!!!

The "standard" I've always used was 7'-0". I dont' think its written anywhere. . . just got it from planning and building my garages and talking to door reps.
Sometimes I will write in a report if an opening is too low. For instance, last week, had a high end home where the openings were arched. The highest point of the opening was only 6'-4" which mean that the sides of the opening were only around 5'-10" or so.
I don't write it as a defect. . . just letting the client know to check their cars before pulling in. Most cars will make it. SUV's proably won't and cars with luggage racks probably won't.

Garage Question

Good question!!!
I stand (without hunching over looking for loose change on the ground) 6'5". There was only 2 times in older detached garages almost "farm-style"garages, that I had to duck down, to go through the door. And I did report it as low clearance.
Without going through the IRC, I wonder myself if there is a such code or maybe a standard from the garage door industry? - Especially with the Monster SUV's that are on the market.

The guidelines I have heard for residential garage doors is 6 foot 6 inch to 8 feet max. Many old DIY garage doors are less and with little or no clearance above the overhead door. Some of the older side hinged doors are much shorter just clearing the roof of some big cars. I use the 6.6 as the minimum for cars. and caution clients about taller SUVs or trucks.

"8 feet max"? Why?

6'-8" for a rollup sectional and 7' for the old fashioned swing-out. That's what the standard has been around here since they invented cars and decided they needed their own houses.
PS: never set your ladder up on the driveway in front of a garage door until you confirm it's a sectional type.
