This beam has been cut at the carport. Owner does not know when. It does not look like it has moved.
What would you say?

Hmmm,

What would I say? Probably something like, "Some horse's ass with teeth has weakened the beam that supports the roof over the carport, by notching it more than half of it's depth. Have a competent contractor, not the doofus who did this, either replace the beam or properly reinforce what's left of this one."

I'd probably use more politically correct language, but I'm sure you get the gist of it.

This is what I said. "Main support beam at carport has been notched out in the past. This is one of the main beams that carries the weight of the roof and attic framing. Recommend repairs as needed by a qualified licensed contractor."

Good! I'm glad to see you didn't try and massage it.

However, could I suggest saying it like a walking, talking human, instead of a machine, and also tell them why it's not kewl?

How about, "At some time in the past, someone notched the main support beam at the carport more than half it's length. This is one of the main beams that carries the weight of the roof and attic framing, and its strength has been severely compromised. I recommend that a qualified and licensed contractor repair this as needed."?

Repeat what you've written back to yourself. If it's not the way you'd say it to someone standing in front of you, why not change it to sound like it's you saying it instead of the Robinson's robot?

I was hoping some one would rewrite the phrase.

Writing is one I the items that I am working on. I need to get the books that they are talking about in the post of 10 mistakes.

I have even thought about taking the English part of the GED course.

Good for you.

We need more folks in this business to recognize that their writing skills need a little bit of tweaking - including myself. I can't remember where the hell to use commas and other punctuation marks. I cuss the army for that. Ever since they made me take that damn German language course I've had trouble with spelling and punctuation.
