I like them.

If you're asking if they're "proper", this is like that other thread about using non grade-stamped lumber for supporting decks.

Because there isn't the safety issue of supporting people, I would vote that those logs are probably just fine.

To me those posts will outlast most lumber we have today. The house was build in 1948. I don't know when the post where put in. This is a daughter buying the house she was raised in from her mother. My client said it was a three room with a dirt floor when here folks moved in. at one time the post on the porch was brick and here daddy change them out.

This is some of the out of normal things we see doing inspections.

Dollar to a donut says those posts are red cedar (Juniperus virginiana), which do, I think, fall into the code approved category of "naturally resistant" species.

Are those posts structural or decorative? That house could be framed in a way that it's possible for those posts to be either structural members or decorative columns. If structural, not ok. If decorative, whatever floats your boat.
