Does anyone have an idea of what exactly is going on here?

Attic. Overall ventilation is ok (power vents, gable vents). This is the only piece in the entire attic that is deteriorated at all, and it looks like something out of a sci-fi flick.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

An additional establishing shot from a little farther back showing the rest of the area would certainly help but are you sure it's "deterioration?" It looks almost like when the piece of wood was milled this one was too close to the outside of the log and a strip of bark got left on and the piece of wood was never culled from the pallet and they used it anyway.

OT - OF!!!

It's wane -- the edge of the tree where the bark had been. It's not deterioration. The wane is taken into account when the lumber is graded.

Thanks ... not as bad as it looks then ... still makes me want a shower. Here's the only other shot I have. Same board, different spot. Let me know if it changes your mind.

Nope. Still wane and tree sap.

Frame a few houses, you'll get over it.

It's just an injury to the tree. Don't worry about it.

As time goes on, you'll also see pocket rot quite a bit. It looks gnarly sometimes but it's also harmless to the wood. Sorry, I don't have a picture but I bet if you google it you'll find one.

I agree about this being the best site on the planet, but I would, wouldn't I?

ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!
