  1. The natural and environmentally safe air condition is a valuable selling point.
  2. I've been messing around the last few days with some of my toys and those of friends. Binoculars, telescopes, digital cameras and digital video cameras to look at roof's. First this is assuming I can't get on the roof, because if it's possible and it's relatively safe I do. Anyways, of all the toys I like the digital video camera the best. The zoom is better than most bino's unless you want to drop a pretty dime and I can video tape it or snap shot pictures with it. The only draw back I see is the cost. Some decent bino's go from $30-$50 where as the camera is several hundred. Breaking the camera would hurt a lot more. But I'm still considering it. So I was wondering if anyone else used a digital video camera to view a roof?
  3. The best way to learn is to do. Get yourself a weed eater and some vinyl siding then see what happens. - Jim Katen, Oregon Well, you guys have been correct about everything so far so I'll go try it. I just think my neighbor might get upset
  4. I have now seen this event a few times and I am assuming it's a weed eater gone astray on siding that has gotten brittle. I didn't take pictures at the time but I'll try and go back to one of the houses and take some. Anyways, what I have seen is the bottom piece of vinyl having several horizontal holes in them that measure from 2-3 inches to over a foot in length and all having a near height of 1-2 inches. The edges looked perforated like I was poking it with a Phillips screw driver.Almost every time, this is at an area where the ground is raised and nearly touches the siding. The area is the perfect height if you used a weed eater. I've found no evidence of water damage or little critters. I know without a picture it may be hard to envision, but is there something else besides an over aggressive weed eater that could be at fault? I'm thinking the best thing is to just note the damage and indicate replacement is required to prevent further damage, i.e. water intrusion. But I'm personally curious as to why I keep seeing this on homes.
  5. Mentoring and ride alongs are not as easy as it sounds. I think I sent 3 dozen Emails to Inspectors within a 250 mile radius asking if I could get even a single ride along. Of all the Emails sent, ZERO responses. Not even, Sorry I don't have the time etc. I mean no response period. The Franchises will only do it if you enroll in their training plan then work for them (with related no competition clause). I don't think I came across wrong and even offered to pay just to watch them. Still zero responses. What may, and I stress may, be the reason is because they fear local competition and see no need to help me. Through other contacts I talked to a HI friend in Memphis and drove out there from Virginia Beach (16 hours) and did some with him. But otherwise, not a single HI locally has been able to help. One thing I've been thinking of lately is trying to find a retired HI and at least maybe buy him lunch and chat and see where it goes from there.

  8. Well for me it was almost an accident. Although I knew I was going into the HI business, I had just retired from the Navy and wanted to take some personal time off first 6-9 months. At the same time I remodeled my house. Long story short my Kitchen contractor took my $9000 and fled the state. I got a lawyer and sued. Well at one meeting, when I was trying to learn about Sole Prop, LLC etc, I asked him. He explained it all then said his main business is real estate. Now he's my business agent, and I'll get referrals from him. Then I asked who his buddies in the business are and he said he would introduce me to some of them. I thought for a while this might not be ethical, but, I'll charge him the same I would charge everyone, the only benefit I will give him is Thursdays. I'll save all Thursdays till 24 hours prior for him. This way he can set his deal on a time table and it works for him too.
