  1. In my area 70% of the houses are on private wells. That plumbing configuration is vary common and we refer to it as a water softener bypass. It's intended for a water softener or a whole house filter. If close the two side valves and open the center one you will isolate the appliance from the plumbing system so you can replace or repair it. P.S. PVC has been the standard here since the early 1970's.
  2. That roof is way to steep for me, I'm getting dizzy just looking at the pictures.
  3. I found my problem, it was very strange. Somehow a box got checked under folder options on the control panel under the appearance section that said 'show file icons never thumbnails" Thanks for your help.
  4. I tried that Terry, but that only allows me to choose between large, medium, small Icons, and list etc. Any of those choices still only displays a file icon not that thumbnail picture. This is a big problem when I am trying to select pictures to put into the report. If have to click on each picture to see what it is. I am using windows 7.
  5. Pictures are displayed on my computer as a file icon instead of a thumbnail. This is a recent change. There must be a default setting somewhere but I can't find it. does anyone know how to fix this?
  6. According to my Preston's Guide, that model number was made in 1978, 79, and 80. It is 100,000 btu.
  7. John, In the first picture it looked like a single line pump. In the new picture I can see that it is a duel line jet pump. These pumps can pump water up about 40 feet or maybe a little more. That is still pretty sallow. So by comments still stand. Your area my be different but in Michigan they have not installed anything but a 4 or 5 inch bored well with a submersible pump since the later 70's. We just don't have a lot of good water at 40 feet anymore.
  8. That looks like a single line suction pump. In my area they have not installed 2 inch driven wells like that since the 60's. I would be careful about making any comments about the well, water pressure, or volume unless you are specifically conducting a well inspection.
  9. I have always called it 400 amp. It would be very rare for me to find two 200 amp panels that did not have underground service so I can not see the service lateral. Also, the meter bases are always huge entangler boxes. Honestly I have no idea what the meters are rated at.
  10. I have been an ASHI member since 1994 but I have always felt that I get very little benefit from ASHI National. The chapter level is where it's at and I have always been very active with the Great lakes Chapter, currently I am the VP. Even through branding I supported ASHI and never thought of ending my relationship. Recently I have heard talk that ASHI wants to mess with the chapter structure in an effort to break up large chapters that the board views as to powerful and obstacles to moving forward with their misguided plans. If this happens I will not renew my membership. Most home inspectors work independently and have very little contact with other people who do the same thing we do. This is where a strong local chapter comes into play. It is a great opportunity to learn and interact with our peers. I have never viewed any organization as a must have credential. What I want out of a HI organization is, fellowship, standards, education, and of course a unified national voice for our profession. If a new organization was formed that offer my these things I would join it.
  11. When we were whining my Dad would always say "I'll give you kids something to really cry about". When ever we did something Dad thought was half A**ed he would always say "if you don't have time to do right the first time, you certainly won't have time to do right the second time".
  12. It seems like every time a case like this comes up we never get to see the inspection report. At this point we don't know if the inspector missed something or not. I'm surprised the reporter does not hold up the report and say, "see, the inspector said everything was ok".
  13. For the first two months I was not having any success. On March 1st I started following the south beach diet which is basically a low carb diet. I am down 6 pounds is 3 weeks. I think I'll stick with this for awhile. Scott, you may be on to something with the no scale thing. If you feel better and look better than the actual weight is not that important. Being a slave to the scale can be all consuming.
  14. Is this a factory built fireplace? If so, then blocking the vents even partially is a big problem. The vents may be needed to create an air space around the firebox to archive it's clearance rating.
  15. Jim, For the most part I agree with you. My frustration is that I paid for an upgrade to version 5 only 6 months ago. They are giving free upgrades to people who purchased a new copy of their software during the same time frame but not to long time customers that where upgrading.
  16. I have been a PalmTech user for several years. Last July I updated to version 5 and had a few problem with it's compatibility with Vista. They have been helpful but could not fix all the problems. I want to convert to Windows 7 so I called Palmtech to ask them if my version 5 will work with it. Aaron at Palmtech told me I would have to buy and upgrade to version 6. He said he did not know would would happen if I tried to run it with Windows 7. Now here is my problem. If I had purchased a new copy of version 5 in July they would give my a free upgrade to version 6, but since I bought and upgrade I'm out of luck. I think they should have told me a new version was due out in the next month and to hold off. My other big concern is that they told me they have no idea what would happen if I tried to run my current version with Windows 7. Now, if you owned a software company and had thousands of customers using your product don't you think you would have done extensive testing when a new operating system hit the market. I inclined to upgrade to Windows 7 and if Palmtech does not work with it, well then it might me time to move on to another report writing software. If anyone has advise for my it would be helpful, but mostly I am just venting.
  17. Jan 4th - 201 lbs today - 198 lbs Not a lot of weight loss but it is progress. My plan is to count weight watcher points and daily exercise. I am lifting light weights and using my tread mill.
  18. "Michigan medical marijuana rules still hazy for users" That headline could make it on the Jay leno show in his old Monday night Headlines bit.
  19. I'm with Mark. Grow ops are not on my radar. I have never even heard a story on my local news about a grow op being busted in my county.
  20. I could use some motivation also. 5'11" 200 lbs 38" inch waste I would like to get down to 180 pounds again.
  21. That looks like someones "home made" attempt it install a combustion air intake vent. I have never seen anything like it. I doubt you will fine any installation instructions.
  22. The OP said the problems seems to occur when he uses the shower or laundry. This sounds like the dryer or bathroom vent is depressurizing the house. How new or tight is the house construction. I would look at lack of make up air.
  23. That is pretty common around here. They use the space between studs and joists for cold air return ducts. The edges of the carpet act like a filter causing those stains along the baseboards
  24. Was the house preped for a bathroom in the basement? It's possible that it is a sewage ejector system that is not being used.
  25. I have a hard time believing the garage was built like that or that the slab was cut back. I would look for evidence the the foundation wall has moved. Is that a picture of the side or back wall. Like Kurt said, which way is the slab sloping? The whole slab could have migrated down hill pulling away form the wall. Do you have more pictures?
