Whatever they were burrowing in, it doesn't look like wood dust, so it may just be superficial damage to ........ whatever that stuff is. Ceiling tile? Ceiling tile? Foam from inside that metal panel door. I've seen the same thing on overhead garage doors that are foam sandwich. Just a guess, but that's what it looks like, sort of......
