inspectorreuben
I've never seen a crown like this on a chimney before, and I'm 99.9% sure this is a piece of crap... but I could be wrong. It looked 'sandy' and I could dig my fingernails right in to the stuff. Has anyone ever seen a crown like this before? I'd hate to say this is complete garbage and then find out it's the latest and greatest material for chimney crowns. Check out the workmanship - I probably shouldn't even have to ask. Robert Jones
"piece of crap" is accurate. Looks like a homeowner special to me. Look at the condition of the bricks, water has been running in the wrong areas for quite some time. The cracks are already showing. Bad mix on the concrete. Time for a complete redo and by a qualified mason/contractor this time.
Ben H
Can't be anything but crap judging by the looks of it. Was it soft (mushy) ?
Jim Morrison
It's not a piece of crap, but an enormous knob of shite. If you could etch it with your fingernail, where will it be in a year? Trust your instincts, friend.

No, it wasn't soft in the mushy sense; more the same way that a lead water pipe is soft. I could scratch it, and I could probably bury my awl in it if I wanted to. Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

randynavarro
Looks almost like some sort of casting plaster. Maybe the dude was in to special effects (casting molds and such for masks, prosthetics, etc.)

hausdok
Folks need a crown, I don't tell 'em to dick around with goop; knock the thing off and lay up a new and better crown. I usually include the article below as am attachment. Click to Enlarge 127.64 KB Click to Enlarge 139.8 KB Click to Enlarge 177.53 KB ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!
