Robert Jones
Home was built in 1960. This thing was in the back yard. I don't think it serves any purpose, maybe a lawn ornament. Heavy. I think the name is Hickinbotham. Click to Enlarge 77.61 KB Click to Enlarge 73.16 KB

Jerry Simon
Incinerator or composter.
allseason
Many many years ago some towns here in northern NJ had trash bins built into the ground, they looked similar to that. Pain in the ass for the g-men as they had to lift the bags out. Keeps your s--t cool though.
Inspectorjoe
I don't think it's an incinerator or composter, as they both need air. And any in-ground trash receptacle I've seen has been flush with the ground and has a foot pedal on the hinge side to lift the lid. You don't need to clamp down a garbage can lid with five dogs. You did open it, didn't you Rob?
Robert Jones
I did attempt to open it and it would not budge. It was located at the back corner of the lot, right up against the back fence.

They were not ready for you!! YET ! [:-bigeyes
Robert Jones
Damn it. I am soooo ready to visit. Watched movies like Paul and X-Files, so I think I am a bit educated on the alien way of life.
AHI in AR
It's the "good" end of a torpedo tube! Seriously, though, I'd bet anything that its intended use had NOTHING to do with an installation in a yard.
Bill Kibbel
I'm quite sure it's a hatch from a ship.
Tom Raymond
I bet it would have popped right open if had a sonic screwdriver. Every HI should carry one.

Richard Moore
Ah...Kent! Then it's more likely to be a whole buried train. Click to Enlarge 39.38 KB

Brad Manor
Speaking as a guy who spends more time inspecting ships than houses these days, I agree with Mr. Kibbel. Hickinbotham Bros. was an American shipbuilder. -B
