mjr6550
I am not a metallurgist, but I believe there is more variability to cast iron than just about any other metal. Through in differences due to age, exposure to moisture or corrosive materials, etc. and you probably end up with what we all see-some old stuff seems to last forever and some newer stuff fails. I wonder how much variation there is in wall thickness?

plummen
Do you see any blisters in the pipes? C.I normally eats itself from the inside out when people dump draino and acid and other nasty things down drains to clean them out,the blisters are usually a tell tale sign. Ive dug up plenty of C.I ground work over the years that people have dumped that trash down,The top usually looks solid till you open the pipe and see it split/rotted away on the bottom side.
