John Dirks Jr
From time to time I see trenched out walls in crawlspaces. What's happening here? Is this an attempt to manage water or did the builder neglect to fill the trench back in after original construction? Depending on all things considered, I can go either way sometimes. Although, a trench to direct water towards a footer is not a good idea in my opinion. Garry Sorrells
Masons were ahead of the backhoe and would not stop for anything or anyone.
Erby
Builder was just to cheap to excavate the whole crawl space to the same depth. Dug the trenches for the footers and left it at that!

mjr6550
I have seldom seen that. I'm going with the didn't bother to excavate fully and did not backfill either.
Jim Baird
...around here that is very common. Framing got going real fast, only backfill is outside. 8" block can take up to 4 courses w/o balanced fill on inside.
