Black plastic pipe in crawl space???

Recommended Posts

I came across this black short pipe in the crawl space. It was located near the access door away from any plumbing pipe. Possible future Radon system??

That is a back flow prevention valve. It's in the main waste line to prevent municipal sewer line backups from coming into the house. Although you may not see a waste line exposed near it, the line could travel out of the structure under the grade in that area.

Our anti backflow valves don't look anything like that.

What distinguishes this as an anti backflow valve?

The pipe sticking up out of the ground is just a pipe.

The thing at the very bottom of the pipe is the cover from a backwater valve, as John described. I don't see how anyone can actually open the cover in this situation. Someone should excavate a larger hole and put in a sump liner or something with a little elbow room in place of the pipe.

Ours are iron with a big iron cap. What's that little plastic cap get you to?

Those pipes are fairly large in diameter, usually 6" or more. The picture doesn't show the size of the pipe to well.

Wow. Ours are cast iron with a brass flapper. Never seen plastic.

Are they still using balloon framing in your area too? How about that new cement? I think its called Portland.
