It may be a combination termites and beetles as well as ants at the bottom of the pier. What is the age of the home and was the infestation found in a basement or crawl space?

Powder post beetles. painting surface white is common way to gauge activity as well as improve appearance. Beetles can leave large piles of frass.

Yeah, lyctids (PPB),

We don't have those out here; but we do have anobiidae (death watch beetles). They favor the exact same environment that lyctids favor and the damage and frass looks just about identical.

ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!
