Who did this?

Recommended Posts

Was removing carpet in a slab-on-grade bedroom addition and found the wood debris in the attached photo in a couple of spots. Looks to me like someone's been tunneling the PT bottom plate. Found a couple of possible culprits as well. Can anyone ID?

The debris looks like it might contain some pupal cases from ants, but probably not carpenter ants. Probably some nondescript little ants; the kind that people call "sugar ants."

The first culprit is some kind of rove beetle. Possibly the one romantically called the devil's coachman. The other is just a garden variety beetle. No idea what kind, but not one of the wood borers.

I'd just vacuum up the debris, and sprinkle a little boric acid on the perimeter of the slab before installing the new carpet.

Carpenter ants is more likely. They are more industrious that beetles, constantly cleaning house.

I have seen this mess in my own house and have done the forensics.☹️

Here is a pix of a black carpet beetle.  The debris does not look like carpenter ants which leave a frass that looks like it came from sawn wood.
