Foundation sitting above footing?

Recommended Posts

What do you make of this? About 8 foot of the foundation near the two steel columns In this crawlspace has lifted/separated about a half-inch to three-quarter inch space between the foundation wall and the footing. There was no undue stress to the foundation or problems to the structure/floors above. There is a caulked foundation crack nearby but did not look anything out of the ordinary. 32-year-old house.

I'd recommend grouting the gap.

Either that, or insert several hundred more screwdrivers.

Wouldn't it be safer to first try to determine if there are any dynamics involved? Such as clay deposits, for example?

Are clay deposits a thing in Chicago? They're not really a consideration in my area. I always associate them with Texas.

No.  Soil is full of clay more often than not in areas surrounding the city proper, but no expansive clay.
