We had trusses long before gang nails, and arguably better ones. Loose gang plates are a common defect, when have you ever seen a plywood gusset come off?

What changed was computer truss design. If you could enter the shape, the computer could create a truss. No actual skill required. Now anyone could design anything, and they did.

Gang plates might have contributed to the boom of McMansions, but their contribution pales in comparison to the effects of cheap loans, and small setbacks.

Cheap loans were set in motion by our old buddy Billy Clinton and the repeal of Glass-Steagall that turned the banks loose to generate those mortgage based derivatives that led to the '08 collapse.
