I heard a report that said that the guy was just purchasing properties one after the other on paper and then renting them to get the rental income, and the banks eventually were forced to foreclose on them. Sounds like a guy just trying to collect as much as possible (rent and security deposites) in the shortest amount of time with the intent to skip town with the receipts, before anyone got wise to him, and they were pissed that their scheme had been outed.
