kurt
I'm collecting stuff on vinyl siding to go up against a developer who says caulking vinyl siding is fine. I've been to VSI, in here, downloads, etc., but still would like more input. Who's got some vinyl siding stuff?
John Dirks Jr
The 2nd page of this doc recommends against certain caulking of vinyl siding. http://www.habitatdane.org/documents/Si ... eguide.pdf
Bain
What's the guy caulking? The only times I see caulk is between J-channels and brickmold because something wasn't flashed properly.
inspector57
Do not caulk the panels where they meet the receiver of inside corners, outside corners, or J-channel. Also, do not caulk the overlap joints. Vinyl siding must remain free to move. Pretty clear to me. I would think that is pretty universal in all manufacturer's instructions. But if he won't listen to Habitat's instructions, maybe he will like this from The Vinyl Siding Institue better: http://www.vinylsiding.org/publications/ 7. Do not caulk the panels where they meet the receiver of inside corners, outsidecorners, or J-trim. Do not caulk the overlap joints. Or maybe from Certainteed: http://www.certainteed.com/NR/rdonlyres ... CTS205.pdf The only instructions for caulk is for crown moldings, etc. and they have the same type requirement for allowing for movement: Itââ¬â¢s normal for vinyl building products to expand and contractwith temperature changes. To ensure a successful siding installation, you must allow for this movement during application.
randynavarro
IRC defers to ASTM D 3679 for viny siding attachment stuff - if you have the ASTM resource. Then, of course, they just say to install per mfr's instructions. But I'm sure you've already gotten this far . . .
kurt
The more documents the better. I've got some, but the combined force of all of them will be good. What's he caulking? You would not believe this building. It would take a powerpoint presentation to give you the full impact.
jillllee
Ok but help me here. If there is existing vinyl siding, with windows being replaced. What prevents water from running down the siding, into the exterior sheathing if there is no caulking between the jchannel and siding? How is it weather proof/ Thanks for you help,
kurt
Wow, another old thread.......folks are lurking out there....... I think we've got the Vinyl Siding Institute stuff in the Library @ TIJ. Download it and read up. If not....... Go to the Vinyl Siding Institute website and read what they have, and while your at it, check out the Tyvek Installation Guide over at Dupont. Then Google up "rainscreen walls" and find an explanation on one of the DIY site. At base, satisfactorily installed vinyl siding is a rainscreen application.
