dtontarski
I observed this electrical component in a 1920's home. (as is - no cover installed) This was installed on the wall of an attached garage at near ceiling height. (adjacent to the home's kitchen) Download Attachment: Camille 060.jpg 92.75 KBPlease enlighten me as to what I'm looking at. Thanks.
StevenT
Not because of where it is, and if I was to go out on a limb to guess, It looks like some type of transformer... I've seen similar wiring on neon signs.

dtontarski
So..Steven's opinion of it being a transformer is accurate. Opinions on what this might have been installed to support?
homnspector
What Steve said, maybe for a vapor light. Or maybe it is an electric fence controller
JDSchlueter
That is definitely a neon sign transformer. Typically, there is a cover on that box. This is something that you see in a business, not in someone's kitchen.[?]
StevenT
So do I get a prize??? Maybe lessons from Chad on how to shear a sheep? There's a big call for that in NYC.

Bill Kibbel
It's an iron cored transformer capable of probably up to 15000v output. New transformers still look exactly like it. JD is likely correct. If it isn't for a neon sign, it's for a Tesla coil!
Jim Morrison
Wow, I've been away too long. Chad's giving sheep shearing lessons now?
Chad Fabry
Maybe lessons from Chad on how to shear a sheep? I'll teach you to shear but it's up to you to get the sheep in the mood.

Another great thing is if you tell your wife or girlfriend, "hey babe, I'm in the mood to shear the sheep," she has no idea how much shearing you plan on doing. Hey Chad, will talking dirty work? Do sheep have bikini lines?
