  1. Kurt, Thanks for posting the pictures of the project. That tent enabled us to hunker down even in the worst weather and keep working; or at least leave the entire roof exposed at the end of the day without worry. So now, we have the whole system, not part, designed out: Masonry and roof venting, tent- allows unto take a look at the entire roof without the pressure of closing every night- (boat shrink wrap ROCKS!) Reinforcing the structure; adjust the insulation and mechanicals as needed. As always, I appreciate your invaluable advice and involvement on these projects. Marc, the gussets and brackets were engineered. The engineer checked the math on my design and fastener selection Btw, engineers are well meaning: its too bad you can't jamb 25 yrs of experience (i.e. dirt, grit, cut hands, hot sun, cold weather, heavy lifting, etc, etc ) into a 2 year course.... -Kelly
  2. When you're talking about peeling paint, generally you have to follow the water. In almost every case I've found, water pushes the paint off of most substrates including cement siding. Check your flashing details everywhere. Seal where you can because it may be the only thing you can do at this point. Good luck ! FYI - We always install a rain screen behind hardiboard. I talked to a hardi rep last year at an installation demo. They require a rain screen on commercial buildings above 2 stories. If they required it in residential applications, they may not sell much product. I remember approx 15-20 years ago the rain screen material used to be sold along side of hardi board. Lumber yards didn't sell the product so they almost all stopped carrying it.
  3. I'm with Kurt. Wet Windows and 99% chance no drainage plane. Even Hardi sold a drainage plane with the siding nearly 20 years ago and no one bought it. Although it's required on commercial buildings above 2 stories. Marvin Windows sold a plastic pan flashing ... It's not seen anymore. We remove sections of these buildings only for the sake of bringing customers to stage 5 of the depression cycle - ACCEPTANCE!
  4. Kurt, by the way, that wasn't waterproof paint. About a 1/8" of hard efflorescence.
  5. The garbage snippet was pretty funny. I'll be the one holding the bag. We'll use trusses hanging off a ledger, vented flashing under the capstones, vent the perimeter of the roof behind the termination. All you building enthusiasts...this is a great example of the new REbuilding BOOM. . Its too bad no one wants to pay for it!!
