I've got a Mueller Climatrol coal furnace with a Type 501 gas conversion burner in the basement. It's a old fashion gravity hot air system. It's worked just fine for the last 21 years we've lived here. This past weekend the pilot went out. The combustion chamber was covered with soot that was flaking off in sheets. I vacuumed the chamber out and relit the pilot. It's working again , but the flame from the burner isn't the usual blue but largely yellow. There is also a soot deposit building up again. I know these are indicators of inefficient combustion. How can I adjust the air flow to the burner to get better combustion?
