  1. In the absence of a moisture meter, I often us my laser thermometer. A wet/damp spot on the ceiling, wall, etc. is cooler than the area just inches away. This is due to the heat loss when the water evaporates. Sort of like when your sweat cools your skin. I would like to get a non-invassive moisture meter in the future so I can "see" behind tile, drywall, etc. but the laser thermometer works on obvious spots.
  2. I use Yahoo! as my host. It costs me around $15/mo. They have software that you can download for free and make a fairly impressive site. I haven't worked much on mine in a while but I think that it's decent for someone with no programming knowledge. I have several ideas on ways to improve it, just need the time to work on it. www.irsindy.com Tell me what you think.
  3. I have the TPI775 in addition to a Tiff 8800 and Tiff 8800A. I have not had any problems with the TPI, but have found that I don't use it as much as I thought I would. The flamable gas detection head is much bigger than the Tiff and therefore remains farther away from the pipe/fittings, but it does work. Plus, the CO detector is built into the back of the body, not on the wand as one would think. If I had it to do over, I probably would have bought the Bacarach (??spelling??)and added it to the Tiff. I guess that if I didn't have the Tiff, I would use the TPI exclusively. One caution, since it has a push button power switch, it does hav a tendancy of turning itself on. Always carry extra batteries.
  4. I ran across something that I have never seen attempted before. I understand that this chimney is prone to water problems due to it's location in the middle of a valley, but what is everyone's opinion on this "fix". There is rain and ice shield installed under the shingles around the chimney, but I don't see how this could be expected to remain water tight. One side even slopes toward the hip, which is evident by the debris settlement. Comments and recommendations to "write this up" are appreciated. Don't pay attention to the obvious trim and siding issues. I am just looking for other professional opinions regarding the construction of this.
