hmk
I have an old prefab fireplace in my den. The prefab elements are starting to disintegrate. Does anyone know if this fireplace contains asbestos? Thanks, hmk
kurt
Do you mean the interior firebox refractory panels? The mfg's. indicate cracks are not a problem. If the panels are literally falling apart, that is a problem. I'm not aware of any of them that contain asbestos.
hmk
Thanks for the response. I would say that the entire thing is falling apart. Every part of it, including the inside panels, just peel off when you touch them. We have been in the house 30 years and the fireplace was here when we purchased the house. Thanks, hmk
kurt
Don't use the fireplace. Tear it out, throw it away. Have the flue inspected by a sweep capable of performing an NFPA Level II inspection. If they tell you there's problems, tear out the entire flue assembly and replace it.
