That is true about the first pic, the second howerver looks to me like a bunch of small missed roller spots.[] But it isn't. You have to know this market to understand that it is gaps around the insulation and where batts have only been shoved halfway into the bays. Yeah, they might have tried to paint over it and found that it didn't work, but it's caused by improperly installed insulation; I'd make book on it. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

I'm not sure what you mean when you say he "covered the soffit vents with insulation." Do you mean to say that the soffits have insulation in them or are you referring to how baffles were installed between the rafter bays that extend into the soffits and then insulation was placed against the baffles? Michael's comment about the ridge vent and felt is a good possibility. If that system is working right, you should be able to feel the air movement as soon as you open the hatch. If you can't something is impeding air movement. Baffles won't be the issue unless they've been collapsed, which is often the case here. Sometimes the insulation guys place the insulation so tightly against them that the bottom of the baffle is bent inward and only a little bit of air can come up through the edges of the baffles. Do you have a basement or a crawlspace? If a crawlspace, do you have a tight-fitting vapor barrier capping the soil? If a basement, is there anything down there that will be pumping large amounts of moisture into the home? Do you cook with a gas stove? If so, is there an exhaust fan over the stove and do you use it? You've got to seal all air passages around recessed lights, where wires and pipes come up through wall plates, around chimneys, around hatches, etc. Once you've got the ventilation working right, then you'll need to nuke the spore with something to kill it. Killing it is only half the battle if you intend to sell in the future, because if you just kill it and leave the dead colonies there you'll be haunted by the stuff when you go to sell and some anal retentive home inspector goes up in there, finds it and writes it up. With spore you're kind of screwed if you leave it in place. If you use BoraCare or some other clear treatment the stuff will still be evident; if you use Concrobium or some other cover up type treatment the roof is going to say, "Look at me, I had a mold problem," and it will look like you tried to cover it up. That leaves getting the underside of the roof cleaned and then treating everything so that the spore can't come back - treating is where BoraCare can shine but it's no good for removal. Cleaning the underside of that roof is going to be a royal pain in the..... ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Exactly, The insulation guys around here use the cut batts that come in packaged bales and you can see both ends of that batt clearly defined. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

I agree with Jim, I find that most of these insulation guys are lazy as hell when it comes to insulating those catedral ceilings. I think they must be nervous about sliding down into those narrow spaces over the ceiling and tucking the batts in properly because the batting is often there but was just tossed between the trusses and no attempt made to tuck it down between the joists against the ceiling, especially wherever there are wires crossing the trusses. It's a rotational light switch. See 'em every once in a while. I don't think there's anything wrong with them other than the fact that you have to actually grip it and turn it. OT - OF!!! M.

Yeah, The grain and coloring says that the hip rafters are definitely DF. We see a lot of that around here where there's a ton of DF in the older houses. OT - OF!!! Mike

What tarp? Are you going to say "The one that's catching all the B.S. I'm giving?" I think he means to cover your butt crack, which is a roundabout way of saying you've got a really wide keester. I dunno if it's true, if you were a woman I could say but I'm not in the habit of checking out guys' butts. Now Les on the other hand........ OT - OF!!! M.

I'm more technical than that. Yung usually tests all of the appliances but when she's not there and I do it, I usually step into the half bath, tear off a sheet of toilet paper, walk to the sink and wet it under the faucet, squeeze the excess water out, pop it in the microwave and nuke it for 10 seconds and then toss it to the client all nice and warm and say, say, "My company spares no expense for the latest test equipment." It's quick and easy and gets a chuckle every time. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Robert, Are you sure that the vent material used is the combo vent stuff that's supposed to be used with a direct vent? I can imagine that if that's a sealed box and they're using the wrong vent material that flame isn't going to be getting enough oxygen and it's liable to burn pretty nasty. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! That's weird, I see them on about 90% of the homes I do and there's rarely any issue with them burning black like that. When there is, it's usually something that the installer or client did to impinge the flame. The worst ones were those where they were burning propane and they were maladjusted. Nothing specific, I just do what I do. They'll be with me between 4 and 6 hours and will get to see plenty without me trying to do anything special to impress them. I climb up onto every roof that I can safely get onto and walk it. I don' need to put my ladder out there to make them think I do. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

No, Any "credibility" - if you want to call it that - which this site has is the result of members keeping it professional, staying away from politics and religion and keeping it about as much factual stuff as is possible. I don't expect every guest that comes here to be 100% correct an anything they assert here any more than I expect any of you to believe that 100% of everything I type here is 100% accurate 100% of the time, 'cuz it isn't. What I do expect is that guest keep it civil and not resort to the kind of stuff that might get them popped in the mouth if they'd said it to someone who's in the same room with them. If you want to be a Jim Bushart and spend endless hours working overtime trying to discredit someone you have a personal dislike for, do it over on the soap opera where they revel in that kind of nonsense. Over here, we generally try and avoid that. Jim asked the guy to back up his statement with facts. So far, the guy hasn't done that and we're waiting to see if that happens. All of this other shite - what's going on on other forums - doesn't interest me in the least. I'm only concerned about what happens here and the only thing I'm protecting is this site. It's starting to look like CaoimhÃn isn't the only one posting here who's got an agenda. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

I never knew how to do that. I just put a left bracket (I'll use parenthesis here so you can see what I mean), stick url= inside the first bracket, quotation mark, the link, quotation mark, the right bracket, the words I want to substitute, left bracket, /url, and then the right bracket. (url="http://www.inspectionnews.net/home_inspection/general-chit-chat-home-inspectors-commercial-inspectors/18231-green-fallacy.html")demonstration(/url) If you do exactly the same thing and replace it with brackets, you get a one-word link. demonstration Richard's way is probably easier; I just never bothered to learn what all that crap was at the top of the box. Terry, If you disagree with CaoimhÃn on this global warming thing, so be it, but there's no need to get nasty about it; and I think that saying that he's considered a troll is kind of extreme. CaoimhÃn has always been a friend to this site and a lot of the information he has provided here has been pretty solid. We've all been grateful and have benefited from the good information that he's provided here over the years. You guys are piling on because he hasn't responded to Jim yet. I get that, but keep in mind that his business takes him out of town a lot. He might not be anywhere near a computer. Even if he is, he might not be near his computer and is therefore unable to provide a counter argument along with references until he's back home. Why not wait for an answer like Jim is doing before casting any more aspersions? ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

So, back to global warming and greeniness, About a month ago, I was channel surfing and I landed on a program called Conspiracy Factor or Conspiracy Theory or something like that. It's a kind of reality show hosted by that former navy seal, wrestler, failed actor, former governor, clownish character, Jessie Ventura, where they dig into stuff and look for the truth. I generally don't think much of Ventura; hell, if you total up the ages of the two or three young research assistants working for him on the show you probably have Ventura's IQ - nonetheless, those young folks are pretty fresh and energetic - I was paying attention to what they were finding. They laid out a pretty good case to show how the carbon credit thing is a huge scam perpetrated by a guy who used to be with the UN but had been discredited, is making lots of money off the sale of carbon credits, but is now basically hiding out in China. Then they tracked down and talked to some of the folks involved in this whole global warming science issue. They talked to a guy who was one of the folks that peer reviewed the initial global warming theory stuff. He related how the original draft for what was released by the researchers had stuff in it that discredited the global warming theory and how that information was subsequently edited out of what was released to the public. Anyway, I'm sure that a lot of what was shown was heavily edited to favor the show's obvious purpose - to show that global warming is a lie - but some of what some of the folks interviewed said, and their credentials to be able to say it, makes one wonder. As I said previously in this thread, I don't know who to believe anymore. The part of me that likes nature and enjoys the hell out of a clean stream wants very much to believe that we're trashing this rock and we need to do something about it is telling me one thing, and the other part, the ex-cop part, is telling me that the representation of global warming that we're seeing is a thin veneer and that there's more to this "emergency" than meets the eye. If there's proof out there, I'd sure like to see some of it. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Even though it is brushing up against religion and politics, I left the thread up because I don't think anyone has crossed the line yet. However, the first time a protestant, jew, muslim, wiccan, druid or any other religion jumps in here and starts arguing about religion and not about global warming or greeniness, or the first time someone gets on here and starts arguing democrat versus republican versus tea party or Obama versus Bush or Reagan or any of that crap, the pruning shears are coming out and I'll either delete the entire thread or cut up the offending post, and any subsequent posts objecting to the pruning shears, and I won't give a rat's ass how loud anyone bellows. Keep it about the science. If there is proof that global warming is a lie and we can learn about that, let's see it. Just keep the religion and political partisanship out of it. That shouldn't be too hard. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Hi is, I didn't mean to imply in my previous post that he was; only that he comes from the other side of the pond - the one that speaks the other English and that we Americans used to speak that English too. CaoimhÃn might even take a little offense at the term English because it wasn't by choice that our ancestors had to learn English anyway. That's got nothing to do with global warming or the lack of global warming or greenness or the lack of greenness, so I return you to your regularly scheduled discussion. OT - OF!!! M.

Well, the green argument aside and to be fair, I think you are both right on this one. CaoimhÃn comes from the other side of the pond where they spell our center as centre, where they spell our mold as mould, etc.. According to my dictionary, supercede has been commonly used to supplant supersede since the 17th century - the 1600's for you folks that have a hard time figuring out how far back that goes - when we were part of the British empire. Supercede is still commonly used in writings today, though some still think it's wrong; kind of like stable and stabile. That means that "supercede" has been used about a hundred years longer than we've been a nation and been able to call ourself "Americans" as opposed to calling ourself British subjects. When I have time and the inclination, I'll often correct misspellings in the posts of folks before they get commented on. However, when it comes to our Canadian and British Isle brethren, I leave well enough alone. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
