Okay, I fixed mine and Jim's journals. They all should be ready to go. OT - OF!!! M.

Hi All, Okay Brian, I eliminated your journal. Mark, I misspoke. You don't need a code. Just go to your journal, click on the edit icon and you should be able to continue adding to it until we're done with this thing. If you tried and it didn't work; try again. I've fixed it now. I'm also going to lock those so that nobody can respond to them. That'll force us to come out here to chat. OT - OF!!! M.

Well, Since I've never been 6'3" I have no idea. I was 6' in high school. Busted my left femur, losing an inch out of my left leg, and crushed 4 vertebrae in a car accident and ended up 5'11 for a long time. However, I guess age gets to one and at some point there's some bone loss, because at nearly 56 I'm only 5' 10" inches now and I weigh about 240. That's better than three years ago when I was 262. Back then, I went on a summer diet and dropped 64 lbs in 90 days, but never did get down to my ideal weight. According to my doctor, I'm still 65 pounds overweight, so it's time to kick it in the ass.......again. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Okay Guys, All 11 of those are set up. They are only accessible to the 11 guys on the list above and each of you should be able to view each other's posts, so you can see what's working and what's not. I threw in some fake data in the first entry to give you an idea. To keep your journal. Click on your category and then when you see the Diet, exercise..... title click the icon that says Edit Forum Properties, in order to be able to keep your journal. As you progress, just cut and paste the records from one day to the next and change the data. At the end of each day's entry, you should record your calorie count and at the end of the week, you should record your total caloric intake and total weight loss/gain. We all need to make an entry with our starting weight late in the day on July 4th. I think that you'll find that this is easier when you have someone to compete against and with whom to discuss what's working and what's not. If anyone else wants to get in on this, let me know right here. It'll only take me a few minutes to add you. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Okay Guys, You'll see that there is a new forum category for the 2nd Annual TIJ weight off. Anyone who wants to participate in this is welcome to join. Make sure that you've got your What's New selection bar at the top of the page set to "All Categories That You Have Access To" so you'll always see this category when you leave and come back onto TIJ. When you log on and are looking for this one, you'll need to scroll to the very bottom of the 'all forums' page to find it. Now that I've set this up for general discussion, I'm going to create a journal area for all weight-off participants where each participant can keep a journal of what he/she's doing. This will be viewable to only the other weight-off participants, so we can see what's working for others. If we want to discuss what's working and what's not, or make suggestions to one another, I don't think we should be placing comments on someone else's journal. If we want to talk about something we should do that here in the open. I'll set up the individual competitor's journals and do an example of a journal entry in my own. If you other competitors want to use it, I'll shoot you the code via email, so all you have to do is enter it into the first post in your personal journal and then cut and paste and make changes as necessary week-by-week. So far, it looks like the following are in: Jim Katen Brian G. Carle3 MMustola Les Scottpat hausdok chicago Phillip Brad Manor charlieb We probably should be talking about the grand prize at the end of this thing. No? ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

So, How would you guys like to do this? If you want, I can put up a cloaked conference where each person in the weight-off can each keep a journal of sorts. We'd each record what we're eating and doing for exercise each day and record our daily weight gain/loss. I know, sounds like an anal compulsive going all haywire, doesn't it? Well, believe it or not, writing it down and keeping a record, and knowing what's working for others, can help. I had a C.O. once threaten to discharge me back in 1986 for missing my maximum allowable weight by 10 lbs during a quarterly weigh-in. She gave me 10 days to get under my ideal weight or she was going to start the paperwork. This was back in the day when most officers, men and women, had pot bellies that made them look pregnant. I got so pissed off, that at the end of that 10 days I'd dropped 15 pounds. The day of the deadline, after she'd finally recorded my weight as being within limits, and the threat was gone, I went down to the Army hospital in Bremerhaven and had the hospital dietician put me on a diet. I was assigned to a group of folks who were all on the same restricted 1500 calorie a day diet. We were all required to record what we ate and did for exercise and to share that with each other during twice-weekly sit-downs with the dietician. It helped to know what was working and what wasn't. That way, each of us was able to adjust our technique as we went. It grew into a competition of sorts, and I dropped 34 pounds over the next 4 months. It was years before I started gaining weight again. If you guys would like to do that, let me know. You can still keep this thread going if you like. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Washington, D.C./June 29th - Release #07-228 The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with BSH Home Appliances Corp., of Huntington Beach, Calif., today announced a voluntary recall of approximately 42,000 Thermador® Brand Built-In Ovens The ovens can have gaps in the insulation where overheating can occur and when used in the self-cleaning mode heat lost through these gaps can cause nearby cabinets to overheat. This poses a fire hazard to consumers. BSH Home Appliances has received ten reports of incidents, including one which resulted in a fire that caused extensive property damage. No injuries have been reported. This recall involves Thermador® Brand built-in single ovens and combination models which have a conventional oven and a microwave. The model numbers of the single ovens are C271B, C301B,SEC271B and SEC301B. The model numbers of the combination models are SEM272B, SEM302B, SEMW272B and SEMW302B. The ovens have date codes between FD8403 and FD8701. The model number and date code can be found on the underside of the control panel. These ovens were manufactured in the United States and sold at appliance and specialty stores nationwide from November 2004 through May 2007 for between $2,400 and $3,900. CPSC recommends that consumers stop using the oven's self-cleaning mode and contact BSH Home Appliances immediately to schedule an inspection and free repair, if necessary. For more information, contact BSH Home Appliances at (800) 701-5230 between 7 a.m.and 11 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or the firms website at www.thermador.com Consumers can see this recall on CPSC's web site, including pictures of the recalled products, at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml07/07228.html The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $700 billion annually. The CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. The CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals - contributed significantly to the 30 percent decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

I'm guessing that you got called out to repair that and discovered that there was no wiring to it. OT - OF!!! M. -

Hi All, Well, I've got an answer from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I contacted Bryant and they referred me to their local distributor, Airefco (888-247-3326), who referred me to their on-call field representative out of Spokane. He says there's no way that this installation would be factory approved. He says there's no problem venting it up through a chimney, but that the flue has to be an "approved material," that the approved materials are listed in the installation manual, and that there isn't any metal - aluminum or stainless steel - approved as a vent material for any of their 90+ units. He doesn't recall the 'chimney friendly' sentence, so he doesn't know what they were referring to. I suppose I could dig that back out again, but why bother? Brad has the answer he needs. That should settle it for you, Brad. I asked the gentleman to stop by TIJ once in a while and set us straight about anything in the HVAC forum that we're getting wrong. Hope to see him stop in sometime. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Hi, All, I noticed that on another thread Scott P. bet someone a donut about something or other, which prompted me to remark to myself, "Oy! Scott, I've seen your picture, you need to stay away from donuts almost as much as I do. Isn't it time for the annual weight-off competition again? Waddaya say? We start on July 1st and see who can lose the most weight in the next 60 days with results due in on midnight of August 31st. Is anyone in? ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike (aka Sperm Whale)

The whole point of codes is safe construction. We base a whole lot of our understanding of homes on the rules for construction that have been laid out for the past century under codes. Ergo, the entire report is essentially a safety report. OT - OF!!! M.

Hi, Okay, now I understand what the concern is. I think if you had the luxury of removing that ridge cap you'd find that the valley flashings are folded over one another at the apex of that intersection and the panels from the upper roof overlap onto those flashings. Then you've got the ridge cap, which really caps the top of the seams along the ridge. They could caulk that joint, but why; any water running under the end of that is going to be picked up by the valley anyway. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Yeah, Les, me too; except it goes something like this - usually spoken in a whisper: "If you please, for my own safety, could you pay me now? If you don't, and I attempt to go home empty handed, Yung, my wife - you know, that docile-looking little lady over there who was doing the inspection of the interior - is liable to put me in the hospital before nightfall." Hi, Okay, maybe I've found something you can use - a 21 page installation manual for the Englert 1000 series standing seam roof. Try this: http://www.englertinc.com/Panels/Docs/1000%20IG.pdf OT - OF!!! M. P.S. I've added this link to our file directory. It took about a minute and a half to accomplish - only because I'm still not that familiar with the process. It would be absolutely wonderful if everyone could try and remember to add the file links to the file library whenever they post them here. If we all do that, the file library will contain an awsome selection in no time. Thanks, Mike

Hi Randy, There isn't any manual there, but you'll find a bunch of detail drawings here: http://www.met-fab.com/construct.html OT - OF!!! M.

Hi, Be that as it may, I 'm certain that I read something in a BDP install manual that said, "All models chimney-friendly when an accessory vent kit is used." I don't make this stuff up. It was definitely in a BDP 90+ manual. If it were me (it's not), I'd get a look at the manual for that furnace and find out if that setup meets their definition of an "accessory vent kit." Personally, I don't think it does, but you won't know unless you check it out; will you? OT - OF!!! M.

If I'd been there, one of two things would have happened; either I would have had a coronary and croaked on the spot, or you would have seen me break Carl Lewis' record as I ran to my vehicle and burned the rubber off all four of my tires to get out of there. OT - OF!!! M.
