  1. Great, thanks!
  2. Thanks so much for the information. I'm still getting used to this site, sorry, next time ill post it in the correct catagory.
  3. I inspected a house today that had a gas insert fireplace. The first thing that i noticed was a whitie haze in the glass, similar to that of a broken window seal. I turned the fireplace on thinking that the heat of the flame would evaporate the moisture, but after 10 minutes or so the haze was still there. I could see the haze moving, but not burning off. Are there typically two panes of glass, and moisture got in between the two like a broken seal in a window? It was about 20 degrees this morning, and it had a metal chimney (under siding), not a side wall flue.
  4. Everything that you thought i meant, i meant. So, i guess its more of a grammer issue than content issue. I'll do my best to correct this. I guess i make the mistake of typing differently on forums than i do when im being paid by a client (i know you ALL disagree with that). Do you all talk to your wives this way, your friends? I have a totally different personality with my clients than i do outside of work. I don't think that I am alone with that. This thread has told me all that i need to know about this forum. You will all see nothing but professionalism from me from this point forward. Thank you.
  5. Can one of you re-write my original question the way it should be written then? Keep in mind that all of the information known is in the original question (i simply drive past this home now and then). Did i simply prematurely post due to lack of all possible information?
  6. Thanks for your help!
  7. I have been getting nothing but praise from my clients and my employer regarding my work. Im still not 100% sure what exactly everyone is so concerned about regarding my sentence structure/word selection. Dont get me wrong, i appreciate all the criticism, but we seem to have completely strayed from the original topic. Im not the seasoned veteran that most of the posters are here. Ive only been on this site about a week, and i must say that ive gathered much information that will come in handy, but youre right, my first impression of this site is that many of the responses to posts (and not only mine) are unnecessarily harsh, and never really answer the initial question. Its just a bit frustrating...
  8. when im writing my reports i pick my words differently than i do when im on a forum... Ill take a picture of it and post it, i dont know all the information, it is a house i simply drive past on the way to my parents house every so often.
  9. i was going to take a pick yesterday, but i forgot.. to me it does not look like anything to do with the roof, or flashing.... its a perfect outline of the chimney... its strange, it seems like it has to have something to do with the chimney, the chimney does not stick off of the side of the home either, its just in that side of the wall...
  10. are most of the users of this site building (code) inspectors, or home inspectors? im new to the site...
  11. There is a brick home near my house that is painted white, the chimney runs up the one side of the home, also painted in white, but there are dark brown rust marks running all the way up and down the exterior wall where the chimney is? I havnt run into this yet, but i want to know what to report in the event i do... any ideas to what causes this?
  12. for all who care... i called columbia, there is no dating information in the serial number of their products... the woman was very nice, she said to just call (610) 473 8457 when you run into one and she will dat it for you.... the unit in question was serial #772597 and it was manufactured in march of 95....
  13. Ok, this may be a stupid question, but i have run into this a couple times now on some high end home inspections. I test the hard wired smoke detector by pressing and holding the button, they all sound their alarms... press and hold again and they stop... then every 30 seconds to a minute or so, "chirp"...."chirp"... and they are hard wired? I got a call back because of this a few weeks ago... thoughts?
  14. I inspected a house recently, a small ranch, whos main plumbing stack made 3 90 degree turns, before it went through the foundation, and up the outside of the home, and finally terminated below the eave about 6 inches from a window. Other than it not going through the eave and terminating above the roof line, do you see any problems with the vent stack having all these turns?
  15. thanks alot... ill verify it on monday and post what i find...
  16. the serial number of the columbia furnace is 772597 i didnt think that it looked 32 years old though... any thoughts...
  17. When i find out the answer, ill post it... I had an inspection today that had a columbia heater, and plus i have one myself, im figuring its the first two numbers of the serial number are the year, but i want to make sure... i did call them, but with today being saturday, no answer... as far as my username... it was the name of my hockey team in college...
  18. Hello, Im new to this site, i have found some very helpful information regarding manufactured dates of heaters/hot water heaters... Im still trying to figure out Columbia heaters. Does anyone know how to date these? Is there a full list of cheats compiled yet? If not, once i put mine together i will post, thanks for the help.
