Not to sound mean, but you should also read a book about basic wiring. You don't have to be a wizard with electrical theory, but you do need to understand the basic components you are working with, some basic concepts of circiut design, and realize the significant potential for injury or property damage that arises from messing around with something as dangerous as electricity. There are a bunch of really smart, really helpful people here, but doing a little research of your own will give you a better understanding of what to ask and the tools to more fully comprehend the answers you get.
