Crack in shell

Calling on Norm or ???

This morning's inspection included a gunite pool. I am seeking counsel on two cracks in the surface of the pool. One is vertical in the spa and the other is in the top of a step. The vertical spa crack is aprox. 3/16 wide and runs from the bottom of the coping down thru the seat and to the bottom. The crack in the step is less than an eight in width but it is 12 foot long. I typically do not see cracks of this size. Insight any one?

Hey, where's Norm???!!!

Charlie, I'm no pool guru, but if a pool that I was inspecting had cracks like that, I'd call for a pool contractor/specialist. Out of several hundred pools, I've seen maybe 10 or 12 with cracks that were 3/16 or wider. From information sent to me later, all of these needed some type of repair or resurfacing.

Just my 2 cents worth, but I'd love to hear from Norm or another Pool Guru.

Just tell them it's a major problem that will be expensive to fix. Advise them to consult a pool contractor before they buy the house. Not after.

At the outset it's important to understand there is no such thing as a minor crack. Mark is correct when he says it's a major problem. Cracks may be limited to the plaster coat or they may extend through the gunnite shell. It's impossible to tell the difference by a visual inspection. Assume the worst and you won't go wrong. If you're lucky enough to elicit a reliable history regarding the pool, specifically as to how often water needs to be added, this may help. I caution you not to rely entirely on this since the pool may be leaking from an entirely different source. As comfortable as I am with pools I never attempt to diagnose the cause or severity of cracks. I always defer to a licensed pool repair contractor. You observed the cracks, informed your client of their presence, and told them this is a serious condition which requires further evaluation by a specialist. Stop there and you will have served your client well. Try to go further and you're on a slippery downhill course. Having said the above I must admit curiosity does get the best of me and I usually ask my client to provide me with a copy of the repair contractor's report for my own edification.

The first is Tortola and the second is Half Moon(Holland America's Island).

The bay is --- Ya got me. It was just lots of fun and snorkeling.

Norm

Thank you for the input. Your wisdom also hits the mark.

I identified a condition --cracks

Listed a reason for concern --not normal, could indicate a significant problem - breached shell

Gave direction -- Call the pool guy who know his stuff!

Less is more -- I kept my mouth (keyboard) shut after that. I know what I know and thats all.

The over riding thought I had was "What type of Biz could I start up to stay here?"

So, what brought you to the islands and I ASSUME you chose to leave to study brick and lime in Chicago. By the way I usually take a day to wander in the wind downtown when I come up to visit my sister in South Bend.

Interest rates of 15%, no construction work, every builder going broke took me to the islands to remodel a fancy house for a rich guy. I also worked on the (then) new hospital on St. John.

Ain't no business you want to be in down there; great place to vacation, lousy place to live & work.
