CNewhouse Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Does anyone have info on the more recent Challenger panel recall? I know that the 1988 recall was specific to GFCI breakers. However, I can find little info on the more recent recall that happened either in 2011 or 2014. I can't find definitive answers regarding when the recall actually took place, what the issue was, or how many/which panels were deemed concerning. 1
Bill Kibbel Posted February 4 Report Posted February 4 I looked into this about 5+ years ago. The ONLY primary documentation I could find was for the Challenger GFI breakers manufactured during 1988. There were many electrician and home inspector web sites claiming a recall for "unsafe" Challenger panels but not one showed any documentation or link to this statement at the CPSC or any other official source. There were also many posts showing individual panel failures, but no data or other evidence that these panels have more frequent failures than any other recent manufacturers. 2
CNewhouse Posted February 4 Author Report Posted February 4 Thanks, Bill. That's what I'm seeing as well. Seems to me that electricians are raising the alarm as it generates business. And inspectors are writing their reports defensively. But there's no verifiable info to warrant all of the "replace immediately" that I'm seeing online. Challenger panels are being grouped with Federal Pacific and Zinsco, but there's no explanation as to why. 2
