Smith Corporation, with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Energy, has developed a new type of 50-gallon, power-vented gas water heater that operates at better than 90% efficiency. According to A.O. Smith, their new Vertex water heater delivers unlimited hot water and has the performance equivalent of a 75-gallon water heater, yet fits in the footprint of a standard 50-gallon water heater, without any major plumbing retrofits.
