  1. On January 31st, 2008 Virginia Tech will present a two-day course - Residential Decks - Component Testing, Code Requirements, Prescriptive Design, and Performance Issues - at the Courtyard Dulles Town Center, Dulles, VA. This course is designed for deck contractors, building officials (plant reviewers and inspectors), design professionals, home inspectors, and manufacturers and suppliers of deck related construction materials. Inspectors are encouraged to attend, because their participation in the course, as well as what they learn during the course, will ultimately improve residential deck construction and safety in their own localities. For more details, contact Frank Woeste at 540-951-0469 Email: fwoeste@vt.edu
  2. Half of the folks from above the Mason/Dixon line just went, "Huh?!" OT - OF!!! M.
  3. I dunno, It's your business decision to make, but I personally think that mentally filing that piece of information away is as simple as remembering how many grounded conductors are allowed under each terminal screw. It requires no effort and you're going to be staring right at the breakers. It's not like one has to dig under a bunch of crap to find them. Do you write a panel up if it has a chipped breaker or if it's double-lugged? ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
  4. Hi All, Immediately after daylight savings time kicked in this morning, the program here on TIJ refused to mark as read the messages that I'd already read. I finally had to reboot my computer and everything was okay. So, if some of you experience the same thing - reboot! OT - OF!!! M.
  5. Ah, A pileated woodpecker! Kewl! OT - OF!!! M.
  6. OK, Insects are attracted to the light at night and the fan sucks them up and sends them bye-bye. [:-bonc01]
  7. Hi Walter, Dunno, I'll shoot off an e-mail to my boss over there and see what they say. Occasionally they do allow me to do that. OT - OF!!! M.
  8. Hi, Well, it's obvious what he's done;he expects it to drain through the foundation vents - either out to the face of the veneer or into the crawlspace via the vents through the foundation wall. The wall will probably never fill with enough water to reach the sills or sheathing, but that still doesn't make it what one would consider a professionally done job. OT - OF!!! M.
  9. Chris, check your PM's.
  10. Yeah, I know Al; I've seen your videos. Norm Abrams meets the Travelocity gnome. [] OT - OF!!! M.
  11. I doubt it. Most masons that use that detail will completely fill the void behind the below-grade brick with mortar. When they do that, they're supposed to use through-wall flashings and weeps in the first course above grade. It sounds pretty plain to me. Just write it as being wrong, cite the code as the basis for your call, and recommend they have it fixed right away by a competent mason - not the same guy who tried to fake the weeps. OT - OF!!! M.
  12. Your on the wrong forum, Will. Go to http://www.heatinghelp.com OT - OF!!! M.
  13. For the reasons I stated, Bill. You can do that if you want to, but I think it makes more sense to simply soak them with some detergent and rinse them off with a garden hose. OT - OF!!! M.
  14. Uh, Darren, If I were you, I'd stop telling people to clean those things in the dishwasher. I don't know about you, but I really don't want pet hair and all that funk getting rinsed off and clogging up my dishwasher. It's very simple just to spray them with some detergent, let it soak for a while and then rinse them with a garden hose and then reinstall them. OT - OF!!! M.
  15. So, now an oped piece about how licensing is needed and it begins to build steam. To read the piece click here.
  16. Are "they" female office help? I hope that your wife isn't leaving you unsupervised around other women. Those sexual harrassment lawsuits will wipe you out likety-split. For those of you wondering - After Missouri, my impression is that Les is sort of the Denny Crane of the home inspection business. It's a wonder his wife hasn't cut a reglet in his forehead, or someplace lower, by now. OT - OF!!! M.
  17. Ugh, That's one butt-ugly house. OT - OF!!! M.

  20. Hi All, If anyone is interested getting up to speed on the changes for 2008 in the NEC, and you've got an extra $400 to $500 lying around waiting to be spent, you might be interested in one of the Mike Holt seminars coming to a city near you. To see the flyer click here.

  22. My reports are a moving target, Chris. I'm constantly learning and changing them. You probably can't find any two that, aside from the layout and format, are completely grammatically alike; such is my ongoing battle to drive the passivinspectorspeak demons from my reports. There was enough passive inspectorspeak in them when I began back in 1996 to float a battleship; now, probably only a dinghy or two. It's a bitch learning new stuff, or should I say unlearning old stuff, at our age. OT - OF!!! M.
  23. Hi Randy, They're actually not usually that hard to reach. You pull out the pot drawer, lift it off it's track, lie down on the floor, and you can reach it. OT - OF!!! M.
  24. Sure Russ, Carrier has 'em. They've got an online review course for $29 and an ABC's of AC course for $60. Check out page 1 of their catalog. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
